Tips and Information on Buying an Antivirus

With a seemingly endless amount of pc protection solutions to choose from, it can be hard to make sure you get the right product for you. Here are some top tips and valuable information which will help you make your decision..

Do macs get viruses

Do Macs get viruses?

The short answer is Yes. Apple computers are generally less susceptible to getting infected by a virus when compared to a Windows computer.  This is mainly due to the Windows market being a lot bigger, virus developers want to target as many victims as possible, and by targeting more people, the chances of the virus spreading is much more likely. Spending time developing a virus for a small percentage of the market would almost be a waste of time for them.

Below are some other reasons why Apple computer are less likely to become infected than a Windows computer:

  1. Mac OS X, is built on the Unix Kernel, which is one of the oldest and most secure operating systems available.
  2. Virus developers are more familiar with the Microsoft Windows and so it’s easier for them to create a virus for this platform.
  3. Most of the scripts, tools and code used to create viruses or malware are designed for use with Microsoft Windows.
  4. Macs have an in-built security software called Gatekeeper which prevents any third-party applications from executing if it hasn’t been digitally signed and approved by Apple.

However, there are global tools that can cause viruses on both Mac and Windows via browser extensions and plug-ins like Java or Adobe Flash. Most users will have these installed and so compromise the security of their whole system.

These days, the popularity of Macs have increased so much that the market for virus developers is looking much more appealing and so viruses are becoming a lot more common on Macs. In 2014 a massive security flaw was discovered – if you were connected to an unsecure wifi hotspot, a hacker had the ability to access all of your personal data.

To be sure, we suggest protecting yourself with an antivirus. Safety first and all that!

Does my mac have a virus

How do you know if your mac has a virus?

Mac viruses are quite rare in comparison to Windows and so you may think you’re immune to ‘catching’ one. That’s not the case. There are a few ways in which you can tell if your Mac has been subject to a virus.

Unexpected pop-ups and advertisements – Adware is becoming more and more popular on Macs, so if you’re seeing ads in places where they didn’t used to show up, the chances are you’ve been infected by Adware.  Especially if pop-ups are appearing without opening your internet browser.

Your Mac is running slowly – Usually this is a tell tale sign that your Mac has some sort of virus, whether it’s malware, spyware or adware.  Malware is the most dangerous but on a Mac the chance of getting infected by this type of virus is slim.

Run a malware scan – To be sure, we recommend downloading and installing an anti-virus suite, this is the only sure way to check for any viruses. But not only do they check for viruses and system errors, they should also clean and remove any dangerous software.

If you suspect your Mac has been infected or you want to prevent virus infections we suggest getting Total AV today.
